It's fine to leave kibble out for him, just measure the amount per day that you put in the bowl so you can tell exactly how much he is eating. I feed mine kibble mixed with canned food and a bit of water twice a day, and leave a bowl of kibble out throughout the day, just in case they get hungry.

The amount to feed by weight, age and/or breed is listed on the package of food. Some will eat more, some less, but it's a good place to start to see how much he should be eating. More active pups may require more.

Also, at 6 months, he may have trouble eating the kibble as that's also the time they can be losing their baby teeth. He may do better eating a softer food, or offer him kibble softened with warm water, to see if he can eat more.
