I have a 7 year old Yorkie Georgie and almost 5 year old son Isaiah. They have had their moments over the years but for the most part they get along great. I was so worried during my pregnancy since I know that typically Yorkies don't care for small children (there are some that love them). Here are a couple of suggestions I have:
* I agree with Chachi have a small child give her a treat. You could put your hand under the childs hand.
* Anytime a small child is around I would ask if they want to pet her. If they do then take their hand in your hand (make sure she see's both) and pet her that way. I think it has to do with trust.
I also know that the way Isaiah approaches Georgie has a lot to do with it. If he's calm and talks in a calm manner he gets a different reaction from Georgie then if he's excited and wild. While I don't expect Isaiah not to be excited and wild he is 5 I do think he has started to understand that when he is around Georgie he needs to be calm. Georgie is 4lbs and Isaiah is 60lbs so I don't blame Georgie for being defensive. I know from my experience it takes time and patience.
Good luck! |
