My boy,Reno is kept in long coat, so I prefer to trim and shave the top 1/3 of the ear hair, as you would for Yorkies being shown. Ruby has bigger ears, if I leave a little more ear fringe, they appear smaller and more balanced with her petite face, I still trim the tips though. Razz ( for now) and Jack have long puppy cuts and I prefer trimmed ears with that style.
Traditionalists would say the top 1/3 of the ear hair should be shaved. It gives the yorkie a more alert (perky) appearance and keeps the ears standing nicely. But, I do think some Yorkies look very cute with all of their ear hair kept longer.
