In this case because you were already finished shopping they could have let you pay and then asked you not to do it again, but it was their right to ask you to leave.
When people have a business they are providing a service to those who want it and if they have certain limits that they wish or are required to enforce then that is their right...just as it is our right as consumers not to use their service.
Actually, this probably has more to do with state laws, than individual store policy regarding food being sold, but I've always wondered why it's okay to have a dog eat with you if it's on a patio, but not in the restaurant. It like they think the dog germs will be more potent inside?
