There is a thread in the Breeder Talk section that I started entitled "Early Spay/Neuter" and there is a letter from a vet who explains why it is BETTER to spay (if you have chosen this as the best option for your girl) AFTER the first heat as well as the fact that the breast cancer risk is so negligible that it should not be a factor in the making the decision.
There are certain traits and instincts like loyalty and the maternal instinct tha do not kick in until AFTER the first heat.
