I think your 3 year old will love the puppy no matter what. But I wouldn't get too small of a yorkie because of your child. I have a 3 year old too who has been around small animals his whole life, but it's easier with a little bit bigger of a yorkie. Brandy is 5 lbs and they get along very well.
I think you should go and meet the yorkie and the chi and see which one fits in your family the best. Good luck with whatever you decide!
