I have the eye gunk issues and my oldest (15) gets gunk that is black like tar. Just was at the vet and he said not to be concerned, the little hairs cause irritation and to use a cotton ball with warm water to soften. I use a flea comb to help get it removed also. They are all used to the routine now and tolerate the process.
