Default Cuterebra parasite=warning GROSS

Hi all! We just had a disgusting evening, ended up removing a Cuterebra fly larvae from my yorkie's rump. She developed a small lump on her lower back a few days ago which started oozing and caused her to lick it a lot. I was keeping the area clean when today I noticed something moving in the now ulcer like sore - eww! I grasped the skin around the sore and out popped a maggot looking thing

My skin is crawling just writing about it. Not knowing what had just transpired I immediately googled and found out what it was.

Cuterebra Infestations in Dogs

I wish I had known the warnings about what can happen if the larvae is left in the skin in any way, so I came here to see if others had experienced this. I only found two references to it, and both ended badly.

I just want to alert others who cherish their pets of this apparently rare but possible situation.

Take care

The worm in Xena was completely removed and is actually still alive in the baggie waiting to go to the vet for follow up.
