Our trainer said to ignore the behavior you dont like when they're vying for attention, such as barking and jumping up. Turn your body away from the dog and just do what you have to do. It may take WEEKS (because the behavior has been reinforced for quite awhile) but it does work eventually-if you show NO reaction, they;ll learn that freaking out doesnt do them any good.
