I trim Jada and Bogie on the kitchen counter now, but they both will stand still for me. When I first started doing the grooming on them myself, I put a vinyl tablecloth in the floor and trimmed them there. I never had a problem with them getting into the hair.
Maybe put one of them in another room while you are doing the grooming. Good luck it does get easier the more you do it and you will find what works best for you.
Once I tried keeping the shop vac handy thinking I could vac up the hair as I went...bad mistake
