Default Chronic Renal Failure diet Alternative to Hills KD Diet

My 3 year old yorkie Tosh has been diagnosed with Chronic Renal Failure
I am doing everthing possible to help him the vet of course prescribed the Hills KD diet which he really likes and he even gained 1 lb in the first 10 days. My concern is the quality of the ingredients, can a more natural diet be more beneficial than the KD? Have any of you tried feeding any other diets and had a successful results? He currently is taking Azodyl, Epakitin, pepcid and just yesterday I bought pet kelp...The pet kelp was recomended by another yorkie mom who lost their baby to CRF.

Tosh has an appointment today to get tested again but his original Creatinine was 4.6 and BUN was 199 after 3 days of fluids his Crea went down to 2.2 then after 1 week of only 2x fluids Crea went up to 3.4 . He had 4 days of sub q and then every other day so I am hopeing the crea went down.

I was recomended to give him a chicken and pumpkin diet but I dont want to switch foods unless the vet ok's it.

Please any advice is greatly appreciated

Thanks!
