How about custom washable potty pads? You can buy them in a variety of fabric colors/patterns to coordinate with most home interiors, so they don't look so unsightly laying around.

I put a extra large washable pade under ZoE's potty pads, so it catches any leaks off the edge. I have a couple of pretty fabric washable pads, that I'm always meaning to get out before company arrives...but I usually forget to. Fortunately her pads are down the hallway, so not visable from the main living areas of the house.

I, personally, wouldn't use a litter box (unless I custom made it myself due to the size of them) as ZoE likes a large potty area, so I put down a couple of pads so she has room to walk around sniffing for her perfect spot, then doing the oh so important circling, before she finally goes.
