You don't have to reward with a treat. You can reward with petting, saying Good boy, pats on the head, just you being happy and letting him know is reward enough a lot of the time. I try to stay away from food rewards bc they end up begging for food all the time.

When I was training for tricks, I would do it at meal times and use regular kibble and not give "junk food" type treats at all.

What kind of treat are you giving BTW?
