I'd call the vet back and ask why, explaing how long he's going to be without food. I know feral dogs and all go days without eating and even water but he's not feral or wild. See if he can't have something up until midnight. I've never had to have any dog of mine be NPO that long and I'vd had dogs having procedures for years. Seems like you could soak some kibble in lots of water and at least let him drink the juice part, the soupy part but ask the vet!
