Fish Oil is regarded as a very safe supplement for both humans and dogs. It is the one supplement that I take myself. The only warning I have read is not to combine it with blood thinners, like coumadin.
A potential side effect: a slight smell of fish. Some human supplements advertise that their brand won't give you fish breath.
I probably wouldn't do both fish oil and coconut oil, but it probably would not be harmful.
Because I am an overly cautious person, I talked to our vet before starting Max & Teddy on fish oil -- this was when Teddy had the bug bite on his back a couple of weeks ago. He said the Omega 3's in fish oil would be great for their skin.
My boys' coats and skin had been drying out recently. Even dad was complaining that they felt very dry. Tonight while brushing out the boys, I noticed a remarkable difference. Dad agreed that in one week's time, Max and Teddy's coats feel so much better. I haven't looked closely at their skin yet.
What really prompted me to finally start the supplement was Teddy had a bad bout of reverse sneezing which I think was brought on by the steroid that he was on for the bug (spider?) bite. Normally dogs drink more when on it, but Teddy drank less. I think the dryness caused the sneezing. It may just be a coincidence, but after about 3 days on the fish oil, Teddy was drinking again and the sneezing stopped. We also discontinued the steroid, but it usually stays in the system awhile.
I highly recommend a fish oil supplement, no matter where you buy it.
