Please Help! Max - 14 year old, post tracheal stent surgery. Hello all, and thank you in advance for your help and advice.
Max is my mum's 14 year old toy Yorkie. He has been suffering with collapsed trachea for 3 years with a swift decline in the 3 months before his surgery. The specialist said his trachea was mush and the worst he had seen, with one bronchial tube affected. Max's coughing was almost constant pre-surgery and it was a heartbreaking decision for my mum to make, but the stent was hoped to be a chance at improvement and despite his tiny body, he is a fighter.
Anyway we are now 4 weeks post surgery. There have been some positives, a quieter less frequent cough, but poor Max is doped up to the eyeballs on codeine, prednisone, corvental. He is ACP'd when his cough becomes more frequent as he is supposed to cough as little as possible while he is healing so the stent doesn't move or break, which means he is out of it a lot of the day. Mum is trying to switch to a more holistic approach and started Garlic & Fenugreek tablets yesterday. My mum would like to stop the codeine tablets but I am not sure if after 4 weeks he would have a withdrawal reaction to a cold turkey stop of the codeine (prednisone is being weaned off gradually). Poor Max's tummy is swollen this evening which is why my mum is feeling like she needs to stop the codeine. Mum is feeling depressed tonight about his recovery. We are trying to keep her positive but any advice that may help Max would give us all a boost! Thank you so much! |
