I would say go with your gut feeling, and maybe going with an older calmer yorkie would also be great. I am not sure how rescues work, but maybe they would give you all a "test" run to see if Gem is happy with the situation? I really understand you not wanting to upset Gem, but maybe he would really love having a playmate?

Maybe I'm bias because I am adding another next year, and I know Ziggy will be happy, but he is younger (only a year old right now)
