I agree. The plastic ones are just not very good quality and it shows in the quality of the stitches and how you can adjust the tension. If you end up liking sewing, you will end up having to upgrade your machine anyway. Why not just buy a better one from the beginning and if you end up not liking sewing, a better quality machine will be easier to sell than a cheap mass produced one.
Check your local Craigslist for places going out of business that need to sell their machines.
