I know someone that has a Yorkie mix that is having issues with bladder stones. He just had his third surgery to remove stones. They finally went to a different doctor this time who found the stones to be of a different composition than the other doctor reported the other stones to be. They are very frustrated as you can imagine. This new physician says the new composition indicates liver shunt which the other doctor had said he ruled out. The dog is a tiny so liver shunt had been a concern. They do not live in an area near a specialist and have had to borrow money for the additional surgeries. It's a very sad situation. They love the little guy so much but are running out of options.

I'm sure with your investigation you have learned a lot about these things. I hope that your investment in time and good doctors pays off for you and Charlie. Hopefully, Charlie does not have major liver problems and they can find a way to prevent more stones.
Yes, yesterday was a consultation the ultrasound being done will be to compare with the one he had done prior in 2010 for other reasons, this time will be specifically looking for a shunt. we have done a new set of labs and a reculture on urine to look for crystals. and the truth of the matter is he does have a liver issue, it is just to find what kind and what is going to be the best way to treat it. and if the ultrasound does not show a shunt because Charlie is not sick on a daily weekly or even monthly basis they would not reccomned exploritory surgery. Now of course if a shunt is seen our course of action may change but for now this is where we are.
