I'm jumping in late here.

Taryn, do you like beans or split peas? If you do, I suggest including them in your diet. Beans are full of fiber and nutritious. They will fill you up, nourish you, and they're good for your blood sugar (you're concerned about diabetes). If you buy dried beans, they're inexpensive (you're in a strict food budget). They're easy to cook up. Just soak and cook in a crockpot. There are many good bean recipes out there (chili, split pea soup, bean curries, etc.).

Truthfully, for me, one of my ways to maintain a healthy weight (and be healthy) is to have enough fiber in my diet.

Hope this helps.
