I am amazed that the rescue did not get her spayed before getting her a home? Anyway, you should spay her. You will eliminate the risk of various cancers that unspayed females are prone to as well as polymetra which is also a deadly disease that females can contract. You won't have to worry about protecting her from males when she goes into heat.
