I know how you feel. The worst part to me was that I could not feed them and they kept asking for their food. IMHO the right thing to do for your dog is to neuter them but not giving them food gave me big guilts.
Just remember not to feed him to much but have water ready when he comes home. He probably will just want to sleep and then look out tomorrow morning as he probably will be back to his old self.
