Gracie has slept with me from the first night. I did take precautions like pushing one side of the bed against the wall and putting barriers on the bed to keep her from wandering. When she grew big enough I got her pet steps so she could get herself up and down.
If your little guy is pretty well trained and you can keep him from falling it should be OK to have him in the bed. The thing to consider is what are you going to do when your partner is back and your dog wants to continue to sleep in the bed???
