Question Paw Protection

My pool area is all cement and my boys LOVE swimming in the pool with the kids... but their pads get soft from the water and then running on the cement all day, they end up raw. Poor Dex was limping so badly last weekend. I don't want it to happen again and I've been scouring the pet stores for things to use on their pads for protection against the ground. They used to make these little shoes that looked like heavy duty balloons and I thought those would work but when I went to buy them they were taken off the shelves because they didn't work well, she told me. So then she found this wax stuff that you rub on their pads and between their toes to protect their feet from hot cement, water, salt, gravel, etc.... I bought some, but I am not sure how this will work. won't the water wash it off or the cement scrape it off. It appears to be just a wax for the surface of the pads.

Anyone know anything else I can try in case this does not work? we should know this weekend if this will work. Need some ideas!
