My father didn't keep his in a kennel all the time they had free roam of a very large farm alot of the time which now I know would not be safe but I am not young so times were very different then. We kids (all 7 of us) played with them daily so they were very much pets. But I understand where you are coming from. Oh and they were also working dogs because in the era I was raised in we ate a lot of wild meat. .
