I've always used a medium sherpa. The dimensions of that are 17" L x 11" W x 10.5" H. I've never had any issue with any airline using it & have never been asked to demonstrate if my dog could stand up & turn around in it.
I like how the top of the SturdiBag is squishy & can be pushed down a little to fit under things, but still retains it's shape.
