i would suggest instead of picking him up when he growls to actually taking him off your bed for 10 min. this will teach him you are the alpha and he cannot act that way on your bed. he does think its his bed so everytime he growls take him and put him on the floor and do not allow him up until you say it is ok kind of like a time out. you can also hold him down on his side until he submits. very gently turn him on his side when he growls and hold him until he is submissive..i would only use this when he is super out of control. i hope you find a solution. good luck.
