I actually personally think you've been extremely wise...and the gradual build-up is by far the best way to go...
Probably, even if you had gone, you wouldn't have been able to relax and enjoy - every dreadful scenario would have been playing through your mind. We can't help it, they are tiny and so baby-like - a good decision!
