You are right; so much of this depends on the weight. Once a dog is over 4 pounds the risk of hypoglycemia is much less. That’s why there are different rules for toy breeds. Most of the breeders I know say they won’t let a dog go home until it’s at least 2 pounds, so if the OP’s dog is already over 2 pounds it’s not as dangerous.
