Using a good shampoo and conditioner will help. You also need a spray conditioner to spray the ends when combing. If you want a long coat you need to commit to combing at least once a day. If your dog's coat is silky you can get away with once a day. A cotton coat may require more work than that. Make sure you use a good metal grooming comb and have a nice pin brush as well.
I prefer using all natural shampoos and conditioners as they do not strip the coat and damage it. A bath once a week helps keep the coat clean and conditioned. Daily grooming keeps the coat from getting mats and only takes a few minutes when the coat is kept in good condition. If you don't really have the time to do the daily grooming it is kinder just to keep the coat shorter.
