I see I'm not the only one who wrestles with this problem. I think all the commenters make valid points. There's not a clear-cut solution, IMO.

I'm not comfortable leaving either the harness or the collar on when I'm not home for fear of it getting caught on something. It's happened to me, and my dogs have had long days snagged in a blanket or something waiting for me to get home.

But if I only attach the tags when I'm home, it defeats the purpose. They're not going to escape when I'm watching them.

I settled for attaching the tags to the harness when I leave them with a sitter. Since I never trust anybody completely, I feel slightly more comfortable knowing they're tagged when I'm gone.

The rest of the time, they're untagged -- only chipped. And I'm not real comfortable with that.
