Sleep Puppy Crying Every Hour at Night

Hi, I'm new to the forum. We recently adopted Jackson who is now 11 weeks old (we got him at 9 weeks).

At night, we put him in his crate located next to our bed. At first, knowing that he has such a small bladder, we would set our alarms for every couple of hours and wake up to let him out. He would go potty about 50% of the time and only had an accident in his crate once or twice.

The last few days we decided that we would let him let us know when he needed to go and stopped the preemptive potty breaks. He hasn't had any accidents in his crate, but he is waking up every hour or so crying and banging on his cage until we let him out. He is going potty about 75% of the time when we bring him out now (every hour).

Is having to to to the bathroom this frequently normal for a pup his age? He is not a huge fan of his crate (he cries for a few minutes when first put him in the crate at night and lock the door) so we can't really tell if he has to go potty or just wants to be played with. Any advise would help.

Thanks,

James
