Just to go off topic a little, but I do disagree with this train of argument. Ellington my boy is pretty awesome. I like looking after him. But he is not like a child to me, and what I would do/give/sacrifice for my dog, is not the same as what I would my child (or another child).
For some people, we can love out pets, but they can remain pets, and separate to what we feel for children.
