I actually read somewhere that several of these houses either get sold, or the owners lose them, due to the taxes being so high that they can't afford them. Same thing with extreme makeover. You may have a free home, but the taxes are more than your original house payment, as well as increased utilities.
Just because you knock down an old house doesn't mean the mortgage goes away, and those don't always get paid.
It's actually sad if you think about it.
