Yea, they can get sorta gooey on the ends, but I have never noticed any growths or visual problems which I thought were serious enough to pick them up before the "length" limit was met. My biggest problem is keeping an eye on them, and not letting them get too short.
My concern is the choking hazard when they get too short. I'm sure Gracie would try to swallow the end of one if I ever gave her the chance. I don't want to take the chance of it getting stuck in her throat. Could cause problems sitting in the stomach of a dog for several days also. A large dog might be able to pass it but could also cause a blockage in a smaller dog.
