Awww, we all feel that way when we have to leave our lil furbabies. I still get that way, and mine are 6,5,3. But you are doing the right thing, by crate training.
As a puppy, I crate trained mine, and they really have learned to enjoy being in there. They feel safe, and protected. Sometimes mine will go in there just to be left alone and take a nap, and the door will be wide open.
I give them a toy to enjoy for when they are bored. I like the Kong. They like to try and get the treat inside. (it also makes them tired)
I am crate training a 6 month puppy, that we got a 8 weeks old, and all I have to say is crate and he goes right in there. He gets a small treat everytime he goes in there, so he doesn't fight me at all.
Enjoy him! They grow up so fast.
