Freezer will kill parasites, but not bacteria or germs. It slows down the growth of bacteria and germs. They don't reproduce as fast, but they remain alive. If you want to kill the germs, you can microwave them for about 30-60 seconds, but let them cool off before giving them to your dog. Microwave also dries them out and gets rid of excess moisture.
Joey's bullysticks dry out pretty fast in AZ and the type I buy only the tip ever gets moist, never the whole thing. I microwave about an inch of water for 30 seconds and put the bullystick in the boiling water and nuke for another 30 seconds. This softens the tip and kills any wayward germs, and Joey makes me do this! He throws the bullystick at me until I do it! He's turning into a little bully!
