You want them to dry out after they are done chewing them. They harden back up. Don't put them in an air tight container as that is going to keep it gooey.
When I gave Gracie her first bully stick she chewed for hours on it! The next one she chewed quite a bit but not as much. I think she just was so chew deprived before I got them that she went kind of crazy with it. Now she might chew for a few minutes once or twice a day. She seems to get more interested in it when she is excited about something. When someone comes to visit or when she has just come in from a walk she seems to want to chew.
The bully sticks are icky but they have really solved the issue of her stealing things to chew on. They make her happy so I am happy.
