My best advise is for you to control the toys. For all dogs, "control" is the way they establish dominance. Whoever has control of food, toys, bed, person, is the head dog. So if you keep the toys in a toy box and make them sit while doling out the toys (one at a time), then you are establishing control and therefore your position as head dog.

The reason they run with the toy and hide it is to start piling up. "The one with the most toys, wins!".
