I would do the same as you.

In fact I just switched vets for that very reason. I had scheduled Destiny's spay and was told she would have to stay the whole night and there was no staff on site after hours. Why would I leave my baby in a cage in an unfamiliar place all alone after she had surgery? There is no point to that and it is dangerous. Either they need to have staff on site or I should take her home. I even asked if I would be able to take her home and they said no. So I told them forget it, I would find a different vet and I did. I found a great vet and she gets to come home the same day.

It is just senseless to leave a dog at a vet clinic after surgery when no one will be there. What if something went wrong? No one would know and the poor baby will be scared and all alone.
