Sadly most groomers love to shave dogs because it is easier to do then actually spending some time doing some actual grooming. I'm sorry. Your dog is adorable with or without hair.

I live in New York State also. My baby has an issue with the cold and while the summer months we do have can get really hot it is only 2 months out of the year that we have warmer weather. Last year I kept Gracie long because of her issue with the cold. She would still get under the covers with me or under her blanket if I had the fan or AC on.

This year I had the groomer trim her length to just below her belly and she trimmed her legs to match her body length. I think she looks adorable (but that's just me) It got rid of her uneven ends. I have never combed through her hair with a razor comb. That is generally used on a dog with under coat that mats a lot. Most Yorkies have no undercoat and that is why they get cold so easily. Some have a "cotton" coat that tends to mat a bit more than the silky coat. With daily combing you should be able to keep either kind of coat mat free. If someone does not want to do daily grooming then they don't want a long haired dog. I personally love long haired dogs and have had one most of my life.

The good thing is your baby's hair will grow back. Just be really careful about what groomer you use. If they won't do what you want then you don't want to let them touch your dog.
