I've seen those memorial stones & think that is a wonderful idea.

If they are outsiders/gardener type people who enjoy working in the yard, they might enjoy a special shrub or small tree to stand as a living memorial. A special plaque or stone could be placed on or near it. Or, a memorial plaque for the house could be nice - even a stone statue or figurine of the dog breed could be very nice.
