You can keep him plenty happy with the right tools. For example, trick training and obedience training: it helps stimulate his mind and it helps create a bond between the two to you. Games! Play hide and seek (if you can trust to him potty in appropriate areas), indoor fetch, tug.... Just be creative! Hide a squirrel, or a simple hide his favorite toy in a box can be entertaining for hours.
