You are so right! Our big dogs (adult, I should say) go outside to potty. And the puppies use pee pads. But since they are now big enough to go outside for a little while, I go too and watch over them. They watch the adults going potty and now they are all doing it too. The pee pads don't need to be changed nearly as often. (Except when they get a notion to play with them and tear them up! - which does happen now and then!) And it is so cute when the little 1-l/2# or so males hike their leg the first time! We had one that I think hiked his leg at only 7 or 8 weeks of age.
And, no, I don't think he was "marking his territory" -- I think he was just mimicking his adult male buddies.
