You did the right thing enrolling him in classes. A good instructor will give you many training tips. Then, practice, practice, practice...only 5-10 minutes 2-3 times per day.
You didn't say what he already knows, but an essential skill is coming to his name. Don't say "Fido, come," if you can't enforce it. Use his name in a happy voice with a treat for responding. Play "hide & seek" where you hide and say his name in a happy voice, while he looks for you. Then, treat.
