| I have shared this story before, but I've so enjoyed reading all your loving tales, I'll share again.
So serendipity seems to be at play here in many of our stories. Well mine is; my trainer of my Black Russians is Ilona, who is also a breeder of Yorkshire Terriers. So for 3-4 yrs here we all are training together; our group of Blackies, Plus Ilona's Yorkies. Twice a week, I got to look at those wee doggies, doing what the big ones could, and sometimes better!. We;d also go to conformation and obedience shows together. Up until that point hubby and I thought of small dogs, with the derisory term of "ankle biters"; no interest in them at all.
Well BBQ;s and hanging out with the Yorkies, plus the Blackies slowly began to change our minds. Well to be honest mine first; as hubby usually wasn't present during training sessions. No ankle biters with her feisty crew! My admiration for the breed was growing. One day relaxing after a show, having a fun group BBQ, one of Ilona's Yorkies, just up and jumped on my lap! Oh My. And she had to jump over Magic my big boy to get up on my lap! No fear, no shyness, she just curled up on my lap and well my heart melted.
So late fall when Ilona was over for dinner, I announced I'd like to get a Yorkie!. Silence at the table...teehee. I'm not sure who was more shocked hubby or Ilona.
At the time I thought my sister who had been asking for a small dog for her own, would be fine with a Yorkie. How-ever I also knew I wanted an agility dog, and really knew I was prepared to pay for all the training, the vet care, and if she lost interest, then the dog would be mine and no problem for me.
So we talked at the table more, why I wanted a Yorkie (for agility), and for Judy my sister. But still I would not have gotten a Yorkie unless hubby agreed. NOr would Ilona sell me one either, she said you two talk it over, and have Dave(my hubby) call me. lol. Apparently they actually did talk, something I didn't know for ages. What-ever he said convinced her that he was on board with the idea.
Placement of a dog especially with a large dog owner family is really important to Ilona. We went over our house with a fine tooth comb, as I showed her my preparations to take in this wee one. Well at least wee in terms of relative size.
So she does have a litter on the ground. They were about four wks old at the time of our dinner talk. So ants in my pants here, I say, well what do you think? They are now six weeks old, I've not seen any yet, but I know the Mom, and I've researched the sire. Is there one here that you think might do for agility? She looks at me and says well, yes actually two and they are males. Oh phew I said, I love males! She smiled and said I know.
You can visit on Sunday to meet the pups! Oh boy oh boy oh boyo! Seven wks old, I come and am aghast! Oh dear these pups are so so tiney. Remember I've only seen "adultish" Yorkies, competing and training in obedience rings.
I see the whole crew 5 puppies, interacting with each other. We sip tea and watch. Of course Yorkies being Yorkies, they have to come over to investigate. They tumble around my feet. Ilona says have you seen enough of the group. I said yes. She removes the two females from the pack.
Now I know, I'm watching the three males. They wrestle n tumble with each other. She says to me, which two do you like? Now we are looking at structure, and personality here. I pick two. She smiles and says YES, one of those two I have in mind for you.
Then the "kicker", would you be willing to show the Yorkie if he turns out? Both pups were show promise, with great structure and temperament, and would be more 6ish lbs. A larger dog which you do want for agility.
I said of course, for sure, but you know I know diddley squat about showing Yorkies. No problem I will help you. Which she has done, over and over and over again.
So we are down to two. I've watched, I've looked, I've picked up the two males. We have some more tea. After the second cuppa, both males came tumbling back to my feet; I pick up one and pet him, cute boy, calm in my arms. I pick up Razzle, and he gives this big sigh and cuddles into my chest; my heart leapt! He was the one for me.
We have never looked back. My multi champion and GCH Razzle.
