Have you tried him with a harness (light weight cat harness)? Bribed him with treats? Put the harness on him and carry him while walking the 2 year old? I persist only because it's the absolute quickest and best way to get them to bond. Maybe carry him to a spot a little way away from your home (so he's not so eager to return or to not leave to begin with).
Where did you get the 3 year old from? From the behavior you described... it sounds like he was used as a stud at some point in his life.... is he bonded with you?
