I did this with my boy. I just took treats with me and took him out at "pee time" and when he went outside I gave him lots of praise and a treat. I kept the pad down but would not give him treats for going on the pad. After a while he only wanted to go outside and I was able to pick the pad up. Some people also have had luck putting the pad outside and having them learn that way.
