The first one I got was used off ebay. The seller said she bought it when her dog was still a puppy so now needed to get a bigger size. It's quite a bit of money for one, so I would say wait until she's about 1 1/2 then buy one. Usually about 1 year they stop growing "up" and then from until about 2-3 they grow "out".

As for gaining a pound after spay, I wouldn't really agree with that. Really depends on when the dog was spayed. For example, if it's a puppy, of course she will gain some more afterwards. For an adult dog, like Uni wasn't spayed until she was 3 yrs old, she didn't really gain too much, maybe 1/2 a lbs, but her appetite got a lot better.
