Time for a vet visit. Do you know if he has Luxating Patella, or loose kneecaps? Have you examined his pawpad and nails really closely? Sometimes a small pebble or even a little sliver of wood can get imbedded into the pad, or sometimes nails can break. In any case, a vet visit is in order.

When examining if you think logically from the ground up then;
1) pawpad and nails
2) ankle joints
3) knee joint+hock joint
4) hip joint
5) lumbosacral region - ie their low back

You would go through a process of eliminating problems stemming from one or both of these areas.

Knees are evaluated relatively easily through palpation
Hip and Back will require Xrays.
Ankles sometimes Xrays are required.

Hope this helps and good luck at the vet tomorrow
